Nick Montana, son of 49er great Joe Montana, has committed to play quarterback for the University of Washington.
Nick Montana, the youngest son of Joe and who played youth basketball in CYO leagues in Santa Rosa, will be a senior this fall at Oaks Christian High School in West Lake Village near Thousand Oaks. He transferred from De La Salle in Concord before last season. Last year he threw 33 TD passes for Oaks Christian.
Nick's older brother Nathan, who played JV football at Cardinal Newman and varsity basketball before transfering to De La Salle, is a freshman quarterback at Notre Dame, his father's alma mater.
Ironically, Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame's starting quarterback, graduated from Oaks Christian.
According to Rivals.com Montana had plenty of college options and suitors included Arizona, Arizona State, Stanford, Washington, Alabama, Georgia, LSU, South Carolina, Florida State, Maryland, Nebraska, Notre Dame and Ohio State.
Nick Montana is 6-foot-3, 186 pounds. Brother Nate is 6-4, 200 pounds.
Nick Montana said he originally planned to take most of the summer before deciding on a college, but he sold himself on UW after a visit last weekend.
Washington went 0-12 last year and has a new coach, Steve Sarkisian, a USC assistant.

Comment: UW is a great campus and good for Nick to follow a great coach and try to be a part of a program that needs to be turned around. If he has what it takes he'll make it if not he won't. The name helps get him in, but it won't win games or complete passes. So, stay tuned naysayers. The name creates pressure as well as opportunities. Finding fault with a 16 year-old trying to do his best is sour grapes. Oh and since I made more $ than you did last year, let me write you a check. You deserve it. Celebrate Obama. From now on, everything will be fair. Why even keep score in sports? Is that really fair to the losing team?

Comment: SR native, I read the paper and I have lived here for 10 years. I do care about Nick Montana's decision. Of course, the schools are interested in the name. Ever hear of marketing? Selling tickets? This is actually national news because Joe was the greatest QB ever. I believe they still own a house here(not sure?) And how do you know who he is better than? He put up some strong numbers at oaks christian. Its hard to compare unless you watch both players regularly. You come off as another "life just ain't fair" whiner.

Comment: The Montana's lived in Knight's Valley for a short period of time. They are not Santa Rosans. If living here for a short time makes you a native then do a story on Jrue Holiday. He will be s top ten pick in the NBA draft. He was born in Santa Rosa, his dad (or uncle, whatever) was Dwight Holiday who played hoops for Montgomery in the late 60's -early 70's. He is as much a Santa Rosan as any Montana. Santa Rosa was not good enough for the Montanas, quit glorifying them. Nick Montana is not even as talented as Greg Alexander. He is getting recruited as much for his name as his ability...( just like Elway's kid). Schools like to have star-power in their program. The Montanas have no allegiance to Sonoma County, No one cares about them. Do a story on someone relevant.

Comment: If you can move from one house to another with ease... it is easy to get by the CIF regulations. All you need is a legitimate change in address and you are in. Joe can change addresses with ease. Just the way it is!

Comment: thats right whiner. Go out and try to earn your own instead of complaining about someone else. Its such a downer to read about another regular guy getting shafted. Pitiful!
